Neopart, a provider of Supply Chain Management and Vendor Managed Inventory services to North American bus transit authorities was awarded a multi-year contract by Metrolinx to provide advanced supply chain management services for bus operations of a consortium of transit agencies in the Southern Ontario region.

When fully implemented, it will be the largest bus transit VMI services program in North America, providing service to the transit agencies in the municipalities of Brampton, Burlington, Hamilton, London, Oakville, Waterloo and York Region, as well as GO Transit, a division of Metrolinx. Neopart’s VMI services will leverage the significant scale of Southern Ontario’s transit operations through a centrally managed supply chain, delivering improved part availability, reduced costs and a diminished carbon footprint for part distribution in the region.

“Metrolinx and its partner transit agencies have taken transit VMI services to a distinctly new level. The approach of leveraging the purchasing scale of transits throughout Ontario with a model that addresses the unique needs of individual agencies is visionary and will facilitate the delivery of better service at a lower cost to Ontario residents. We are enthusiastic about Neopart’s central role in making this vision a reality and are eager to begin serving Metrolinx, its partner transit agencies and the citizens of Ontario.” - Ray Melleady Vice President Neopart

Under the Metrolinx program, participating transit agencies can choose the supply chain management service model that best meets their unique needs: from next day delivery of needed parts to onsite Neopart stockroom management. Other key program elements and options include guaranteed parts availability, liquidated damages for buses being down due to lack of critical parts, part kit design and development, inventory analysis and planning services, support of a wide range of transit asset management system integration options and full part cost and markup transparency.

In addition, Neopart is establishing a state-of-the-art VMI services facility in the region. This facility will create a significant number of new local jobs and generate supply, service and support opportunities for local manufacturers and other Ontario-based businesses.

In support of its provincial charter, Metrolinx has provided joint procurement services to 24 transit entities in Ontario. While eight entities are initially participating in the Neopart VMI program, all transit agencies throughout Ontario are eligible to participate.

“The Metrolinx Transit Inventory Management Services program is 100% aligned with our strategy to revolutionize the purchasing, warehousing and distribution of parts in the North American transit industry through scalable supply chain and vendor managed inventory services. Our intent is to enable our transit customers to make substantial improvements in operational effectiveness and cost efficiency and to facilitate the ability of our supplier partners, including bus manufacturers and original bus part and material producers, to deliver the lowest possible total life cycle cost to their end customers.” - Michael Johnson Chairman and President Neopart Canada

Johnson added, “With the Metrolinx consortium, Neopart’s North American supply chain services network has grown to twelve (12) transit authorities operating more than 4000 transit buses, a combined fleet that is second only to the New York MTA’s in size.”

Visitors who call Miami their second home will need to spend a lot this Christmas due to exorbitant car rental rates.

A new survey compiled by CheapCarRental.net, renting a car in Florida’s southern tip over the Christmas period will cost visitors four times more than what they used to pay.

On an average day, a typical budget car rental in Miami costs a daily rate of $ 30. However, since December, that rate has risen to $ 111 per day. The price hike represents a 268% increase over the everyday rate, positioning Miami as the highest-percentage rate spiker of the 30 cities surveyed.

Miami is not alone in its Christmas car rental explosion. Other cities instituting significant price increases include Los Angeles (+91%), Chicago (+95%), Honolulu (+194%) and Orlando (+218%).

Not all cities, however, are playing Scrooge with heavy price increases. Many have initiated only moderate rate hikes. New Orleans (+25%) and Atlanta (+18%), for instance, aren’t using the Christmas holiday as an excuse to jack their car rental costs sky high. For some lucky home-for-the-holidays visitors to certain cities like Washington, D.C. (-6%) and Dallas (-16%), renting a car for Christmas will actually be less expensive than usual.

The following table shows the ten cities with the most costly car rental rates for the 2011 Christmas period. The percentage increase, based on a comparison with regular rates, is shown next to each city making the cut. The prices illustrated reflect average rates for the cheapest available car during the period December 23 to December 28.

Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, host of “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™,” will sell another piece of John F. Kennedy history at its 41st Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction from Jan. 15-22, 2012 at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

On Jan. 21, Barrett-Jackson will sell the 1964 Cadillac Hearse used to transport President John F. Kennedy’s body to Air Force One following his assassination in Dallas.

The sale of this piece of history from that fateful day follows the 2011 sale of an ambulance used to transport John F. Kennedy’s body from Air Force One to the Bethesda Naval Hospital. The ambulance sold amid worldwide attention, despite unproven claims that the ambulance was another naval ambulance.

“It’s an honor to be able to offer a vehicle of this stature.” – Craig Jackson Chairman and CEO

“While its duty was solemn, it was also extremely important and played a crucial role in transporting the president so he could be laid to rest, Jackson said.

The hearse is chassis 64Z000050, which was mated to body #64001. It was built by the Miller-Meteor Company in time for display at the National Funeral Home Directors Association Convention that took place in Dallas in October, 1963. At the close of the trade show, the hearse was purchased by the O’Neal Funeral Home in Dallas.

A few weeks later on Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was mortally wounded and taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The O’Neal Funeral Home was summoned to supply the finest casket it had available, as well as an appropriate conveyance.

The hearse then made the historic trip carrying the President’s body as well as the First Lady from Parkland Memorial Hospital to Love Field, where Air Force One was waiting to transport the casket to Washington, D.C.

“The eyes of the world were on this car on that unforgettable day in American history.” – Steve Davis President Barrett-Jackson

While the controversy surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy and the handling of the investigation has persisted since those dark days of late 1963, the O’Neal Funeral Home retained the hearse until the late 1960s when it was purchased by Arrdeen Vaughan, who is believed to have been an employee of O’Neal Funeral Home.

Vaughan owned the car for more than four decades until it was sold privately to its current, third owner. As a hearse distributor and early collector, Vaughan is responsible for the preservation of this incredible piece of history.

Barrett-Jackson is currently accepting bidder applications. For more information on how to own this piece of American history, please visit www.barrett-jackson.com/bid.

An incident involving a tanker truck occurred last Dec. 14, 12pm at the SR60 freeway. resulting in the closure of the areas between the I710 and I605 and causing damages to Paramount Blvd.

Montebello Mayor Frank Gomez issued the following statement regarding the incident, the city’s response and ongoing efforts to mitigate the impacts of the situation:

“Since this accident occurred, we have been working around the clock with the appropriate agencies to ensure the health and safety of our residents and anyone travelling through the Montebello area. During that time, we have worked to reroute traffic and support the California Highway Patrol investigation into the accident and the ensuing Caltrans structural safety inspection of the bridge and surrounding freeway.

“We are thankful that there were no injuries to the public from this incident and are now focused on the effort of rebuilding and helping our residents get back to life as usual. We want to assure residents during this busy holiday shopping season that Montebello is still open for business, and we encourage them to shop locally. We will continue to provide updates to the community as they become available.”

Caltrans announced that it was determined that at least the portion of the Paramount Blvd. overpass above westbound SR60 would have to be demolished and rebuilt. Caltrans has already begun work on the demolition, while an assessment continues as to whether the portion of the overpass above eastbound SR60 is safe for travel.

As a result of the damage, access to SR60 is temporarily closed from I710 to Rosemead Blvd. in both directions. Caltrans anticipates that SR60 will open up no later than 5 p.m. on Dec. 16, 2011–in time for the evening commute.

For the latest information on freeway closures and immediate real-time traffic info, please visit www.dot.ca.gov/dist07, call 511 or www.go511.com.

The current state of the economy has a lot of people wondering how they can still afford to purchase a new vehicle.

Some 2.9 million Michigan residents will travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Christmas holiday period, according to AAA’s latest travel survey.

The AAA also forecasts that 91.9 million Americans will travel this year, up by 1.4 percent in 2010.

The 11-day year-end holiday period is the longest holiday travel season of the year, allowing more residents time to visit family or take vacations.

Most Michigan travelers will go by car, truck or van to destinations this year (92 percent, compared to 91 percent nationally), while six percent will go by air (the same number nationally). The rest will travel by bus or train. Michigan motorists can expect to pay about 30 cents more for a gallon of gas ($ 3.30 as of December 14), compared to last year.

During the upcoming holiday travel period, Americans plan to travel an average 726 miles roundtrip, down from last year’s 1,052 miles. Median spending per household is expected to be $ 718, up from $ 694. Most of those surveyed reported the main purpose of their trip was to visit family or friends.

While many travelers indicate they will stay with family or friends, those planning to stay at hotels will find average prices up slightly from last year. According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond (mid-range) lodgings over the year-end holidays are expected to increase a modest one percent. Travelers will spend an average of $ 126 per night.

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, year-end holiday airfares are expected to be 21 percent higher than last year, with an average lowest round-trip rate of $ 210 for the top 40 U.S. air routes. However, daily car rental are $ 40 on average – a 21 percent drop.

The projections are based on economic forecasting and research conducted by IHS Global Insight. The Boston-based economic research and consulting firm teamed with AAA in 2009 to jointly analyze travel trends during the major holidays.

During last year’s Christmas holiday period, there were six traffic fatalities reported by the Michigan State Police. Of the six fatal crashes, three involved alcohol. Lack of restraint use was a factor in three of the crashes.

Last New Year’s holiday period, Michigan State Police reported five fatal crashes with five fatalities.

AAA Michigan urges motorists to allow extra time, buckle safety belts, get plenty of sleep and avoid alcohol during the upcoming holidays. If plans call for a holiday gathering, hosts should make sure guests do not drink and drive.

New research from State Farm shows that though texting while driving remains a concern on the nation’s highways, drivers are accessing other mobile web services at much higher rates.

These behaviors may pose equal or greater concerns in the battle against distracted driving.

In a new survey of nearly 900 motorists, the company found that use of mobile web services has increased dramatically over the last two years.

For drivers 18-29:

-- Accessing the internet while on a cell phone while driving increased
from 29 percent in 2009 to 43 percent in 2011.
-- Reading social media networks while driving increased from 21 percent in
        2009 to 37 percent in 2011.
-- Updating social networks while driving increased from 20 percent in 2009
        to 33 percent in 2011.

“Calls from the NTSB and others to ban cell phones are focusing now on both texting and web use while driving. The mobile web is a growing issue for safety advocates concerned about distractions while driving,” said David Beigie, State Farm Public Affairs Vice President. “Additionally, while the focus has been on young people, the data also indicates that motorists of all ages are increasing their use of the mobile web while driving.”

For all drivers, the data showed:

-- Accessing the internet while on a cell phone increased from 13 percent
        in 2009 to 18 percent in 2011.
-- Reading social media networks while driving increased from 9 percent in
        2009 to 14 percent in 2011.
-- Updating social networks while driving increased from 9 percent in 2009
        to 13 percent in 2011.

Ironically, the study showed that use of texting while driving was remaining flat or decreasing in some instances:

-- For drivers 18-29, 71 percent said they engaged in texting while driving
in 2009. That number dropped to 64 percent in 2011.
-- For all drivers this number stayed relatively flat coming in at 31
percent in 2009 compared to 32 percent in 2011.
