This little horror flick that could - produced by Hollywood-based The Sugar Factory on a shoestring budget over a three-year period - has peaked festival circuit interest with its multi-talented ensemble of up-and-coming female stars and its realistic twist on the vampire genre. Thicker Than Water, The Vampire Diaries Part 1 is a dark comedy about a family taking care of their vampire daughter.
First-time Writer/Director Phil Messerer (winner Best Director - B-Movie Fest) claims that his debut feature is good - not in spite of the low budget but because of it. "It forced us to rely on story and character rather than special effects. We are very honored to receive the accolade wins and the AOF nominations," said Messerer.
Nancy Douglas, film programmer of the Riverside Film Festival, writes, "One of the most intriguing vampire films I've ever seen."
Rotten Tomatoes' Steve Miller writes, "One of the most intelligent, funny, and touching vampire movies I've ever seen, a fact made even more remarkable when I consider the huge amount of vampire movies I've watched. The script and the talented cast allows this movie to move effortlessly from family drama, to a macabre brand of comedy, to heart-wrenching tragedy, and to blood-spattered, bone-chilling scenes of horror. Every moment of the film is infused with some form of emotion and the viewer is alternatively laughing, gasping or feeling like it's time to cry."
Thomas Baker, Ph.D., who chairs The Accolade, had this to say about the film, "The accolade helps set the standard for craft and creativity. The judges were pleased with the exceptionally high quality of this work." Information about the Accolade and a list of recent winners can be found at 'http://www.theaccolade.net'.
