The Center for Treatment of Paralysis and Reconstructive Nerve Surgery will host the second annual Compelling Hope Symposium inn November at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
The symposium will provide a global forum for the world’s most renowned paralysis and nerve surgical specialists to discuss and explore the newest and most innovative approaches to nerve and paralysis injury treatment.
The symposium, led by Andrew Elkwood, M.D., Course Director, Center for the Treatment of Paralysis and Reconstructive Nerve Surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, will expose health care providers to the most advanced new thought processes in evaluating treatment of peripheral nerve injuries, including chronic and catastrophic conditions.
Global expert speakers include Dr. Shaocheng Zhang, M.D. Professor, Chief Surgeon, Department of Orthopedics, Changhai Hospital, The 2nd Military Medical University, China and Wise Young, Ph.D, M.D., W.M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience, Rutgers University.
Topics will include:
• Current research trends for Spinal Cord Injury treatments that have been presented around the globe.>
• Algorithms that determine the appropriate choice of prosthetic in patients with Spinal Cord Injury, various forms of paralysis and nerve injuries.
• Secondary treatments for Stroke, Spinal Cord Paralysis, Bells Palsy, Diaphragm Paralysis and Phrenic Nerve Injury and why these neurologic issues are frequently under treated.
• The importance of interdisciplinary communication between the surgical and non-surgical specialties in helping to improve patient outcomes.
Physicians will reference ground-breaking surgical cases, including the story of Australian Don Bird, 48, who is traveling to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for a pioneering procedure called phrenic nerve transplant.
It will be performed by Matthew Kaufman, M.D., Center for Treatment of Paralysis and Reconstructive Nerve Surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
